One of the greatest joys I experience in what I get to do for a living is seeing my students and clients have breakthrough moments. Whether it’s a concept clicking after struggling with a challenging vocal task, they book an audition, or even better yet, they land a role, my students’ successes bring me immense joy as a teacher.
I work with a wide variety of ages and ability levels, but most enjoy students who have clearly defined goals in-mind for their learning and development as musicians.
Current and past students of the Swain Studio have been accepted into collegiate programs in voice and musical theater programs at Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Point Park University, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, Otterbein University, Cleveland State University, and Eastern Michigan University. Beyond academia, Swain Studio members have performed at the College Light Opera Company (CLOC), Milwaukee Rep, Busch Garden, Camden Shakespeare Festival, among others.
Whether you’re someone actively performing or just looking into getting back into the swing of things, I would love to hear from you and see if we’re a good match! Through a free 30-minute online meeting via Zoom, I will take you through a series of vocal tasks, listen to where you’re at currently in your vocal development, discuss your goals, and if it’s a good match, I’ll invite you to begin your work with me. If not? I’m happy to make a recommendation for a teacher better suited to your goals and interests!
Perhaps you’ve seen someone wearing a shirt touting The Swain Studio and were curious enough to check out the website, or you’ve seen info about it on social media. Whatever the case, welcome!
The Swain Studio is a community of likeminded musicians spanning multiple age groups and styles of vocal studies. Some members study with me at OHIO University, and others study with me online or in Columbus, OH. We have members as far west as Texas and as far east as Boston, MA.
FAQs
-
The Swain Studio is the name of my private voice student community. Some members study with me at OHIO University, others online, and some in-person in both Athens and Columbus, OH.

In order to be a member, you have to be a student of mine in some capacity — whether that be a regular private voice student or someone who does pop-in lessons with me on occasion.
First, after reaching out via email we will schedule and conduct an initial 30-60min lesson/interview. During this initial consultation I will assess your voice and current ability level, answer any lingering questions you may have about the voice/voice study, and decide whether or not we’re a good match. In instances where I feel a student may not be best served by my teaching, I will do my best to make a recommendation for study with another instructor.

Well, for starters, you get first-dibs access and notifications of offerings - whether in-person or offered virtually. You’re invited to participate in concerts, are able to be apart of an exclusive members-only Facebook group where you can pick my brain and connect with others, as well as be apart of a community of likeminded individuals.

“Professor Swain is everything you would want in a voice instructor. Not only is he incredibly informative, but he is also kind, compassionate, dedicated, and observant. Professor Swain is also incredibly open-minded and is able to grow and adjust alongside his students to make sure each student’s individual needs are met. His ability to see students as human beings first sets him apart from other professors. He truly wants what is best for each of his students and finds innovative ways to help his students achieve their goals.“
Julia Kuzmich, BFA Musical Theater Graduate ‘23, OHIO University
“Professor Swain fosters a fun, stress-free environment which enables students to experiment confidently as vocalists. Under his teaching I have been cast in dream roles and excelled in my university’s juries. Lastly, he has always been available with clear and helpful tips regarding proper vocal technique. In short, he is a vocal wizard!”
